What is the difference between a Psychologist and a Counsellor?
Both psychologists and counsellors offer a safe space to talk and provide support when life feels overwhelming. The main difference lies in their training and focus.
-
Psychologists have extensive university training and are registered health professionals. They can assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of mental health concerns and use evidence-based therapies tailored to each person’s needs. Psychology sessions may also be eligible for Medicare rebates with a referral from your GP.
-
Counsellors are trained to support people through challenges such as stress, grief, relationships, and personal growth. They may not provide formal diagnoses, but they offer guidance, coping strategies, and a compassionate space to explore what’s happening in your life.
Which one is right for me?
If you’re experiencing ongoing mental health concerns, would like a formal assessment, or want to work with someone who can provide specialised treatment, a psychologist may be the best fit. If you’re going through a life transition, seeking support with personal issues, or simply want a safe place to talk things through, a counsellor may be right for you.
Ultimately, both can make a meaningful difference—the most important thing is finding someone you feel comfortable with and supported by.
